Muay Thai Boxing

Thai Kickboxing is an ancient art form which utilizes all of the body’s natural weapons to create a devastating fighting style. It is equally competitive in the ring as it is effective for self-defence. This art differs from Karate and Kung Fu in several respects. In Muay Thai, “conventional forms” do not exist, nor does the practice of “pulling your techniques” before they make contact. Using specially designed pads and no-nonsense training methods, kicks, punches, knees and elbows are practised full force without holding back. Muay Thai’s no-nonsense approach to training makes the techniques easy to learn and extremely effective for self-defence, regardless of athletic ability. Muay Thai is simple and stresses conditioning, power and self-defence.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a style of martial art that focuses on ground fighting. It is based on the principle that a smaller, weaker person can defend themselves against a bigger, stronger opponent by using leverage, proper body positioning, and joint locks and chokes called submission techniques. Located in North Vancouver, Universal MMA offers a complete Robert Drysdale Jiu Jitsu program. We have beginner classes and advanced classes for seasoned practitioners. We incorporate technique, live sparring, competition training and fitness. Although our classes are intense and vigorous, our instructors recognize that each student is an individual with unique goals and will progress at their own rate in accordance to their athletic and martial arts background and fitness level.

No Gi Jiu-Jitsu

This style of Martial Arts concentrates on grappling and brings together techniques from Jiu-Jitsu, Freestyle Wrestling and Judo. No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu is a great way to get in shape while learning skills that can be used in Jiu-Jitsu competition or real-life situations.
In general, our classes begin with a warm-up to increase stamina and fitness, following the warm-up various techniques will be covered such as submissions, sweeps, escapes, reversals and takedowns associated with grappling. Classes usually end with some light drills and free training with the student’s safety in mind.

Kids Kickboxing & Fitness

Our Kid’s Kickboxing program combines the fundamental techniques of Kickboxing, Muay Thai and Western-style boxing in a fun, safe and supervised environment. Our focus is to develop an improved level of fitness and self-esteem whilst instilling respect, discipline and self-control – values that our kids will benefit from in all facets of their lives.  Classes run every Monday and Wednesday at 4:30 pm and are available to students between 6-16 years of age.
